Ekonomický imperializmus v globalizácii

Globalizácia by sa vraj dala prirovnať k rozbehnutému rýchliku bez rušňovodiča....

The process of globalisation, according to Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize winning economist, is a flow of ideas. He called upon the Third World economies to take advantage of globalisation just as the western countries did at the end of the first millennium. This has fuelled outstanding progress in the western countries in the scientific, technological and economic fields. However, Sen has not said how this so-called progress was used to colonise large parts of Asia and Africa, to exploit their natural resources and markets only to boost the living standards of the people in the Europe and American continents.

Economic globalisation is entering a critical phase. A mounting backlash against its effects is threatening a very disruptive impact on economic activity and social stability in many countries.

There are genuine anxieties and questions. Even governments and mega corporates have realised that. The most enlightened global corporate houses have realised that they have a social responsibility, apart from being accountable to their shareholders. Governments have also realised that it is important to talk to civil societies and non-governmental organisations.

Now in the second phase of globalisation, the anti-globalisation mood seems to be petering out. There may have been several companies succumbing to foreign competition. Each government has to chart out a comprehensive strategy to protect its their domestic companies.

Globalisation has led to mega mergers. Mega mergers have been fuelled by the stock market frenzy and vice versa. This has led to problems for the stock markets and economies as well. Further, we have seen many such mergers not being 'successful'. We need a basic global policy to prevent extreme concentration of corporate power so that consumer choice and interests are protected.

Globalisation has been described as a runaway train without a driver. There should be a global mechanism for its governance. We need to put in place a set of laws and guidelines.
