Jadrove elektrarne su ekonomicky vyhodne

Iranski experti vidia pohyb k jadrovej energii ako vyhodny ekonomicky tah....

While many Western countries question Iran’s efforts to apply peaceful nuclear energy for electricity production, Iranian economic experts see this transformation of energy as a very beneficial economic move. Nuclear plants are not new entities in the modern world and have been around for more than 40 years. Some European countries are building new plants; so why not Iran?

Many have said that countries like Iran possess enough oil and gas resources and therefore their quest for taming this energy is futile, an IRNA commentator noted.

In answer to these assessments, it can be said that Russia approximately produces eight million barrels of crude oil daily and stands as the world’s biggest holder of gas resources, while enjoying the benefits of 30 nuclear power plants for producing electricity.

If we were to construct a 1,000 Megawatt electricity plant based on fossil fuels, we would need either over 10 million barrels of crude oil or 2 billion square feet of natural gas annually.

Considering the price and the amount of fossil fuels this would not be a logical step. With the 10 percent increase of various fossil fuel consumption in the country, applying nuclear energy is a logical move.

If consumption increases annually at this rate, it will be doubled within a decade. This means three million barrels daily will be used for domestic purposes, which will only leave Iran with less than a million bpd for export.

Currently Iran electricity production capacity is 30,000 megawatts; this figure needs to reach 60,000 megawatts so to answer the domestic demand for energy within a decade.

The maintenance cost of a nuclear power plant is 10 percent of a fossil fueled plant; constructing nuclear plants so to answer domestic needs in the future is necessary.

Aside from the economic drive behind producing electricity from nuclear energy, its positive environmental aspects should also be considered.
