Platinum futures in New York may extend gains on investor demand and concerns that supplies may fall in South Africa, the metal's biggest producer, said Kazuhiko Saito, chief analyst at Interes Capital Management in Tokyo.


The metal is set to overcome the slowdown in the U.S. economy that has blunted price increases in commodities such as crude oil, and the most-active platinum contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange may reach $2,000 an ounce in ``early spring,'' Saito said in an interview.


``Since last summer, the mines have repeatedly stopped and restarted. We still can't envision a path toward stable supplies,'' said Saito, a commodities analyst for 14 years.


Kamei, managing director at Tokyo-based Market Strategy Institute Inc, forecast platinum prices to rise in the ``medium to long term, while there was a risk of a ``price collapse'' after price gains in the past few weeks.


``Long-term demand has built up among pension funds. Those who bought recently are hedge funds'' and other investors buying for the short-term, he said.


The mining disruptions in South Africa, which also affected gold production, may have a greater impact on platinum than bullion because of the nation's supply dominance, said Saito.
