Gold pounded at the gates of US$1,000 an ounce this week and was part of a wider assault on the record books by several commodities.

While the spot price of gold hit US$992 an ounce in New York, silver attained its highest since 1980, and futures for platinum, corn, copper and soybeans touched records.

Prices were the talk of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto yesterday. And while many pondered where gold would go, Rainy River Resources Ltd. spokesman Brad Baker saw it hitting US$2,000: "There are people who think I'm just arm-waving, but I don't think that's the case at all.
