Last week gold rose in London, heading for its best year since 1979, as higher oil prices and a weaker dollar spurred demand for the metal as a hedge against inflation and as an alternative investment. Silver also advanced.

``The major driving force for gold this year has been the weaker dollar,'' Bernard Sin, chief gold trader at MKS Finance, one of Switzerland's four precious-metals refiners, said by phone from Geneva today.

Gold may reach $1,500 next year, surpassing the all-time high of $850 set in 1980, according to GoldMoney.com founder James Turk.

PLATINUM DEMAND

Mining companies have failed to keep pace with platinum demand, which has increased every year since at least 1998, leaving a supply deficit in seven of the last eight years. The dollar's decline against 14 of the world's 16 biggest currencies this year has helped mitigate higher prices, supporting consumption.

Palladium for immediate delivery was unchanged at $363 an ounce. Palladium is also used in autocatalysts. The metal has advanced 8.7 percent this year and is heading for a third consecutive annual gain. Palladium will average $350 next year compared with $355 this year, the Bloomberg survey showed.
