Food prices (especially rice prices) all over the world are sharply increasing and could spread the risk of social unrest, Analysts said.
Consumer prices in China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, soared 8.7 percent in February, or the fastest pace in 11 years. In India, the most populous country after China, inflation has climbed to a 13-month high.
India, the largest rice producer after China, increased the minimum export price for the grain last week, and China imposed export taxes on the commodity at the start of the year.
Vietnam, the third-biggest rice exporter after Thailand and India last year, will reduce shipments by 11 percent this year to 4 million tons.
Major rice producing countries such as India, China, Vietnam and Egypt are curbing rice exports so as to make sure enough stocks for domestic consumption while countries like South Korea will release grain from state-controlled reserves to cool prices.
Thailand and Vietnam will allow the Philippines to draw from their emergency rice reserves. Vietnam will let the Philippines access 10,000 tons of the rice it has pledged to Philippines’s emergency reserve.
